The Area
The history of Cefalù embraces myths and centuries of culture. Its ancient Greek name Kephaloidion means “head” and derives from the promontory of the Rocca for its unusual head shape overlooking the town. A city of great historical and naturalistic interest, starting from the Rocca that houses the remains of the protohistoric Temple of Diana and continuing with the wonders of its historic centre, including the Cathedral, which is part of the Arab-Norman itinerary of Palermo-Monreale-Cefalù Unesco Heritage.
Cefalù is also known for its beautiful golden beaches. The town beach, also rich in lidos, extends up to the iconic Porto Vecchio, a panoramic place from which to enjoy an enchanting view of the city.
Only 30 km from Cefalù, Castelbuono is a little, medieval town in the hearth of the Madonie Park. The village is characterized by the rare Manna, a very precious product obtained from the ash bark. Not to be missed a visit to the Castle of Ventimiglia and the ancient clock tower. In Castelbuono you will also find the famous Fiasconaro artisan products while, to taste the excellent Sicilian wine, a visit to the Abbazia Santa Anastasia Winery will be an experience to remember.
The Madonie Park, a truly interesting nature reserve from a naturalistic point of view, offers several hiking routes to discover the beauty of its villages and natural attractions. Nature from the viewpoints of medieval villages offers unique views reaching the Aeolian Islands with your eyes.
The Aeolian Islands archipelago faces the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina. Enchanting places lapped by a wonderful sea, characterized by a wild nature and “shaken” by two volcanoes always active, Stromboli and Vulcano. Defined as the “seven pearls of the Mediterranean”, these islands enchant with their extraordinary charm. Milazzo, from whose port ferries and hydrofoils leave for the Aeolian Islands, is 138 km away from Cefalù.
Myth, art, culture, fairy tale landscapes: this is Tindari, 110 km from Cefalù. Its Greek theatre leaning against the side of a promontory looking towards the sea will amaze you. Here the main attraction is the Sanctuary of the Madonna Nera with inside the cedar wood sculpture representing the Virgin with Child. Beneath the promontory lies the Oliveri-Tindari Lagoon, a stretch of sea of exceptional beauty, nature reserve and access point to the Beach of Marinello.
Palermo, with its Arab-Norman monuments belonging to the Unesco World Heritage route, is 65 km from Cefalù and definitely worth a visit. The old town is an open-air museum: walking through the streets of the old districts you can admire historical palaces and extraordinary churches, an elegant theater, fortresses and royal courts, squares and monuments of everlasting charme, that coexist next to lively popular markets where the tradition of street trade is almost a sacred rite.
To conclude the Arab-Norman itinerary, just 10 km from Palermo is Monreale with its Duomo.
