Etna View is located in the municipality of Trecastagni, one of the highest villages in Sicily on the slopes of Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe.
The origins of this village date back to the 14th century and, in addition to being immersed in an area rich in naturalistic attractions, it hosts some ancient monuments of great artistic value, including the Church dedicated to San Nicola di Bari, considered one of the most beautiful works of the Sicilian Renaissance.
The village stands in a particularly panoramic position and is part of the incredible natural and landscape heritage of the Etna Park. Its territory includes chestnut, oak and holm oak forests replaced, at high altitudes, by lava flows that have followed one another over time and is characterized by the presence of various volcanic cones.
The undisputed attraction here is Mount Etna, whose presence has a great impact on the area.
The volcano originated from a series of geological events that occurred over time and is bordered to the north by the Alcantara river, which digging its bed on lava soil has given rise to suggestive and narrow gorges that are part of the Gole dell’Alcantara river park.
Excursions to the volcano start from two main points: the Sapienza refuge, on the southern side, with a large car park, where it is possible to take the cable car to reach an altitude of 2900 meters; Piano Provenzana, a ski station on the northern slope, with a large car park and ski lifts, from where you can walk or take a 4X4 bus up to the Observatory at 2400 metres. Excursions to the summit craters can be carried out with qualified local guides and it is advisable to always have the appropriate equipment for the high mountains.
Catania, the second largest city in Sicily, is just 13 km away. The town, founded by the Greeks and then conquered by the Romans, retains traces of both civilisations, whose passage is testified by some ancient monuments, such as the theatre, the amphitheater and the baths. Over the centuries Catania has undergone various dominations to which its churches and monuments date back. Castello Ursino, built by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia in the 13th century, now houses the Civic Museum. Its historic centre, an example of Baroque architecture, has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, while its large squares host numerous religious and folkloristic events, including the feast of Sant’Agata, the third largest Christian festivity in the world.
The colorful fish market, La Pescheria, with its typical atmosphere, is also worth a visit.
The beaches in this area are very beautiful and different from each other. La Plaja is a very long golden sand beach in Catania, while a few kilometers further north are the black lava cliffs that culminate in the legendary “Riviera dei Ciclopi” and the stacks of Aci Trezza.
Not to be missed the opportunity to spend an unforgettable day in the enchanting Taormina, where you can take a nice walk along its shopping street and enjoy an incredible panoramic view from its square, as well as from its Greek theater.
In Taormina you can also admire one of the most beautiful views of Eastern Sicily, Isola Bella, a rocky island covered in dense vegetation that can be reached on foot across a narrow strip of land from the beach located in front or by cable car.
A little further away is Siracusa, whose historic center on the Island of Ortigia exudes great charm, as much as its Greek antiquities and its Baroque churches. Siracusa is about 80 km away and absolutely worth a visit!
