Palermo is the fifth biggest city in Italy concerning population, and the biggest on the island, seat of the Sicilian government and main harbour of the island. Palermo is the big city with the palace of King Wilhelm (the Royal Palace where the Cappella Palatina stands), city of the hundred mosques, city of the three languages, city of the Arabs, Normans, of Pisa, Genoa, Venice; a mixture of singular populations, each of them passing through left a touchable trail of their culture in the buildings which fill the most significant parts of the old city.
From the Teatro Massimo, the biggest opera house in Italy, to the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (a rare example of mixing and overlayering of styles comprising Norman, Moorish, Gothic, Baroque and Neoclassical elements). It is a city where you just cannot rest your eyes since there is always something new to look at. And yet there is more: nature reserves and extraordinary seascapes adorn the city surroundings. Palermo is easy to reach, but very hard to leave behind.
